Dr. Emma Stewart-Bates
Dr. Bates’s expertise ranges from sports vision to the treatment of complex eye disease.
Dr. Emma Stewart-Bates earned her Doctor of Optometry and Master of Vision Science degrees from The Ohio State University College of Optometry. Originally from Northeast Ohio, Dr. Bates was a competitive swimmer for 17 years and a collegiate NCAA athlete at Kenyon College, where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Classics.
Her research, “Proportion of Myopia among Youth Athletes across Different Sports and Locations” (OhioLINK), examined the relationship between outdoor activity, sports, and the development of nearsightedness, contributing to the growing field of myopia control.
Dr. Bates completed training at the VA Medical Center in Akron, OH and University Hospitals in Cleveland, OH, and went on to a residency in ocular disease at Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, New Mexico. Dr. Bates has extensive experience managing eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and dry eye, as well as prescribing specialty contact lenses and complex glasses prescriptions. She also enjoys caring for pediatric patients ages 5 and up.
Outside of the office, she enjoys traveling, hiking, spin classes, caring for her plants, and reading. Dr. Bates looks forward to providing patients with compassionate, personalized care that helps them feel confident in their vision for life whether in the classroom, a sports environment or in the workplace.
